Timelapse Mastery Workshop

Nothing captures the power of nature or the energy of urban environments quite like timelapse photography. While most cell phones and some cameras have a timelapse mode, the results are usually less than stellar. Creating truly stunning, professional timelapses requires specific techniques to plan, capture and edit your sequences. This workshop will teach you everything you need to know in a hands-on experience so you can create your own masterpieces. The workshop is divided into two sessions. Both are included in the course. Session one will be held in San Marcos.

Session 1: Capturing the Holy Grail

Transitions from day to night or night to day are often referred to as “holy grail” timelapses because they’re some of the most challenging to capture and edit due to the changes in exposure, but they can also be the most stunning if done correctly. In this session I’ll personally guide you in capturing your own holy grail timelapse from sunset into night.  And, once you learn to do this, you’ll have the skills to capture anything you desire. Some of the skills I’ll be teaching in this session are:

  • Planning your sequence
  • Camera positioning and visual dynamics
  • Determining the best shooting interval
  • Specific camera settings (including the one thing you should never do)
  • Managing exposure changes to produce optimal results
  • ISO and shutter ramping

Session 2: Creating Your Masterpiece

In this session I’ll edit a timelapse sequence from beginning to end. It’s a live, online course so you can attend from the comfort of home. I’ll be using Adobe Lightroom and LR Timelapse for editing and the techniques I’ll be teaching work with any timelapse sequences you capture so you can produce stunning results every time. In this session I’ll be covering the following:

  • Previewing the RAW sequence
  • Determining and setting keyframes
  • RAW file editing
  • Automatically applying incremental changes between keyframes (this allows you to create smooth transitions by incrementally applying changes to all your images while only editing a few)
  • Eliminating flicker
  • Exporting the sequence
  • Creating the final video

  • DSLR Camera
  • Tripod
  • Intervalometer (This device will trigger your camera’s shutter at pre-defined intervals. Some newer cameras have this functionality built in. If not, they’re inexpensive to purchase from Amazon or Ebay. Contact me if you have any questions.)
  • Basic understanding of photographic principals like shutter speed, ISO and aperture. I’ll provide you with specific camera settings while shooting but I won’t be covering these concepts in detail.
